“Hello, Miss magic pussy!” Deejah calls from the entrance to my house.

“No, it’s Miss golden magic pussy,” Alima adds helpfully.

I slap a hand over my eyes, then part my fingers to watch my mom’s surprised face. Her lips parted in an amused ‘o’, eyebrows raised to her hairline, and the mischievous glint in her eyes bides nothing good for me.

Alima and Deejah pause at the kitchen door with semi-embarrassed expressions.

“Oh, Mama Alvarez, we didn’t know you were here,” Deejah blurts out at the sight of my mom and I sitting at the kitchen table.

“So it seems,” my mother chuckles. “Come girls, join us. Sit down. Gina and I were just having tea. And she was about to tell me all about her mysterious admirer. But I guess you two can fill in the gaps.”

They look at each other giggling, and I let out a loud groan, dropping my head on my arms crossed on the table. Why, God? Why? Why did my mother have to be close to my best friends? Why do all of us moms and daughters act like we’re one big group of girlfriends?

On any given day, I love it. Just not today. Not when I’m trying to keep Tommie O’Malley at bay, while he’s sneaking his way into my life.

And Alima and Deejah have not been helpful at all. At least not to me. They are clearly Team O’Malley, and can’t wait till I join in. Well, that’s not happening any time soon. Alima fell for Tommie’s nephew Jansen that first night we met them. And Deejah only resisted a second longer. Now, they’re both engaged to their O’Malleys and conspiring with Tommie to bring me down. Not happening, I said.

Mama turns the electric kettle back on and pulls two mugs out of the cabinet for my friends.

Deejah and Alima settle at the kitchen table with us, almost rubbing their hands with glee.

“I hate you,” I mouth in their direction, and they cackle.

“So, girls. Catch me up. Who’s been sending my daughter all the beautiful flowers, the chocolate, the candy, the gourmet food baskets?”

“And the jewelry!” Deejah adds excitedly.

Traitor.

“Has she shown you the jewelry?”

“No, she has not,” my mother drawls, before turning to me. “Mami?”

“It’s not like that, Ma. Girls stop, I told you I don’t want to be with him.”

They both raise their eyebrows, making comical faces.

“Gina, bring the jewelry, please. Your mother wants to know what it is exactly you don’t want.”

I let out another tired sigh and make my way to my bedroom. On my way there, I can’t hold back the tiniest twitch of my lips. I haven’t been in the presence of Tommie O’Malley in two weeks, but he’s everywhere around me.

From the glorious bouquets sitting on every piece of furniture in my house and office.–Yes, he sends me gifts at work, too. The rat bastard.- To the food overflowing my fridge, and that I’ve been sharing with my family, friends and neighbors. To the daily video calls that greet me when I wake up and put me to sleep at night.
